If a patient enrolled in Part C (Medicare Advantage with drug coverage) later enrolls in Part D, what happens?

They are automatically disenrolled from Part C and return to Original Medicare

In Medicare, a plan that combines medical coverage with drug coverage (an MA plan that includes prescription drug coverage) is an alternative to Original Medicare plus a separate Part D plan. If you decide to enroll in Part D, you must have Original Medicare to access that standalone drug coverage. Therefore, enrolling in Part D triggers leaving the Medicare Advantage plan, returning you to Original Medicare (Part A and Part B). You would then be able to enroll in a separate Part D plan if you want drug coverage.

So the outcome is that you are disenrolled from the Medicare Advantage plan and return to Original Medicare to access Part D. The other options don’t fit because you can’t keep the MA plan and add Part D simultaneously, and Part A isn’t lost.

They stay in Part C and add Part D

They lose Part A coverage

They cannot enroll in Part D
